About Reining

Reining is a judged event designed to show the ability of a ranch type horse within the confines of a show arena. The sport involves showing your horse in a set pattern (there are 13 in total) performing a combination of the following maneuvers: small slow circles, large fast circles, spins, lead changes, rollback, sliding stop, and back up. First recognized in 1949 by the AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) and later by USEF (United States Equestrian Federation) the sport has quickly grown in popularity. The NRHA (National Reining Horse Association) was established in 1966 as the governing body, and continues today with over 800 approved shows and over 19,000 members . In 2000 the FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale) recognized reining, and it became the first western discipline at the World Equestrian Games in Spain in 2002.
Reining is a great sport in that it offers something for everyone from youth to prime-time rider, beginner to professional. Reining combines the beauty of dressage with the excitement of a speed event, and is a great sport both for spectators to admire, and participants to enjoy. Want to learn more?
